Amoris Gratia will organize its work around four interconnected quests: Create Shared Experiences, Research Possibilities, Cure Scarcity and Explore Cosmos.

They are not four separate missions. They are four engines working toward the same purpose. Experiences help us explore meaning. Research expands what we can understand and do. Abundance removes the material constraints that prevent us from doing it. Exploring the cosmos carries our questions beyond the Earth.

Create Shared Experiences

Experiences are where our worldview becomes something people can actually live. We will build worlds, communities, conversations, games, simulations, music and art. Our technology should not merely provide information. It should provide experience.

Community

Civilization begins with relationships. Before building a global institution, we must learn how to make a small group of humans genuinely care about one another. This is why Circles matter.

We want to understand friendship and brotherhood. Trust and conflict. Forgiveness, love, leadership and belonging. We want to learn how humans become communities, and then to build technology that helps those communities flourish.

Research Possibilities

Research is our attempt to expand the frontier of what humanity can understand and do. Our first research direction is voice.

Voice

We are beginning with real-time translation across human spoken languages. Not only the languages spoken by hundreds of millions, and not only the commercially important ones, but the languages of small and historically underserved communities, including those with extremely limited digital resources.

We want to move toward a world where language is no longer a fundamental barrier between two conscious beings. Our research will explore:

  • speech recognition and speech-to-speech translation
  • low-resource and endangered languages
  • dialects and cultural context
  • multilingual reasoning
  • expressive speech
  • low-latency, conversational translation
  • language preservation

The long-term dream is simple: a human being should be able to speak to another human being and be understood.

Scaled Intelligence

Scaled intelligence is one of our central instruments. We do not see it merely as a product category. We see it as a new class of machine: machines that can reason, communicate, simulate, teach and create, and that can help us investigate questions too complicated for one human mind.

SI should expand human agency. It should allow individuals and small communities to accomplish things that once required enormous institutions. We want to build SI that helps humans explore rather than merely consume.

Cure Scarcity

We believe sustainable abundance is critical to humanity’s eventual union. Scarcity separates. It forces people to compete for necessities, makes us protective and makes us selfish. It consumes attention that could otherwise be spent exploring, creating, loving and understanding. We therefore want to work toward a civilization where the material necessities of life become increasingly abundant.

Energy

Every joule matters. Civilization is ultimately constrained by energy, and we want to understand where every unit of it goes: how efficiently it is generated, transported, stored and converted into useful work. We will pursue new paradigms in energy generation, storage, conversion and utilization. The goal is not merely more energy. It is more useful work from every unit of energy available to civilization.

Materials

We want to understand matter deeply. We want to investigate new materials, new manufacturing processes, new forms of refinement, new ways of combining abundant elements, new ways of recycling and new ways of transforming one material into another useful form. We will approach materials science with something of an alchemist’s spirit: not mystical alchemy, but the relentless search for ways to multiply the usefulness of what already exists.

Instead of asking only What scarce material do we need? we should also ask How can abundant materials become capable of doing the work of scarce ones?

Earth’s Resources

We will eventually enter mining and refining, but we do not want to treat the Earth as an object to be consumed blindly. We want to know what we are taking, where it came from and what ecological systems it affects. We want to know how much energy it required, how much material was wasted, how completely it can be recovered and how many times it can be reused.

Extraction should become increasingly precise, automated, clean and accountable. The objective is not simply to extract more. It is to extract better.

Machines

The final component of abundance is intelligent machinery: machines that take available energy and refined elements and convert them into the things civilization needs. Factories that operate autonomously. Robots that construct. Machines that maintain infrastructure, and systems that repair themselves. Automated recycling, agriculture and manufacturing. Autonomous exploration.

The more capable our machines become, the less human labor must be devoted to maintaining the basic material substrate of civilization. That gives human beings more time, more freedom, more curiosity and more life.

Toward Zero

Our long-term aspiration is to push the marginal cost of essential resources toward zero. Not because money is inherently evil, but because many of the things that constrain human flourishing are fundamentally material constraints. If technology can make something abundant, civilization should pursue abundance. If energy can become cheaper, cleaner and more available, we should pursue it. If materials can be substituted, recycled or manufactured more efficiently, we should pursue it. If machines can perform dangerous or repetitive labor, we should let machines do it.

The ultimate goal is not infinite consumption. It is abundant capability with sustainable planetary stewardship.

Explore Cosmos

There is another question that strikes us at a profound level. Fermi asked: Where is everyone?

We do not know. But we find the question beautiful. We do not believe humanity is necessarily the only expression of consciousness in the universe. We suspect there may be other fractals of consciousness: other civilizations, other minds, other worlds, other beings looking into their own night sky and asking the same question.
